My top ten favourite games of all time in no particular order:
Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES): I was addicted to this game. Every week I rented it out of Blockbuster without fail. I never had the cash to buy it, which I now regret. It had an amazing soundtrack, great depth, and wasn't anywhere near as easy as DKC3 turned out to be. Terrific.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles (Genesis): The lock-on of Sonic 3 onto Sonic and Knuckles got the best 2D Sonic game ever created. With 16 zones, and 16 special stages, this was a real treat. And now, thanks to Sonic Mega Collection, I can play it full screen and at 60hz!
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sat): This game owned my entire existance. The fact that it's so rare just makes it even better. I hunted high and low to buy the OST, and even once called a girl "Azel" to her face, just because she looked so similar. I didn't realise until years later that in the language of the game, Azel means "servant".
Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC): Never played the original Dreamcast version, but the GC equivalent provided a top class entertainment piece with unforgettable characters and environments. It's only downside was the omnipotence of the later S-moves (Justice Shield + Delta Shield + Lunar Light + Pirates Wrath = INSTANT WIN).
Ninja Gaiden Black (incorp NG, X-Box): I was introduced to this on my first american holiday by my online mates. I sucked at it (kept going for Flying swallow, kept getting guillotine throw). When I got back home, I bought a second hand X-box and NG. And I played and I played and I played and now, if I had X-box live, I'd be #6 in the mission mode table. The game just has me by the balls and won't let go.
Worms Armageddon (PC): The first, last and only game I've played seriously online. The wacky weapons hide a game of incredible depth, as can be seen by the INCREDIBLE shots made by the pros (5 second fuse on a grenade which explodes in front of your worm's face...thrown from the other side of the map and with 5 ricochets). Infinitely deep and definitely a classic.
Killer Instinct (SNES): Fulgore. Cyber Dash, autodouble, Eye Laser, autodouble, manual QP, Ultra, jump away, jump away, triple laser storm. 32 hits and a serious debunking of my mate's view that "Fulgore sucks". One of my smuggest game playing moments ever.
Megaman II (NES): The most varied Megaman game of all. Unlike it's follow-ups, there were multiple ways to go through the game, making time attack a great past-time. Defeating all 8 bosses and then Wily in one life was also the epitome of awesomeness.
Quake 1 (Sat, PC): This, for me, is the epitome of the first person shooter. Quake 2 took the series too much towards the Doom angle, but the original shooter took the player into a unique, medival environment where the roar of the monsters signalled imminent chaos. How **** scary were Vores the first time you met them?
The Ocean Hunter (Arcade): Finally, I give you the arcade game that ate my holiday money. With the player(s) inside a sealed cabinet with a 32" screen and a "harpoon" gun that actually had a SIGHT on screen (making it possible to see where you were shooting for a change), this arcade game threw you against the greatest bosses I've ever seen. A highlight of the entire game was encountering the boss "Midgardsorm", who was just so big that he swallows you whole. The rest of the level is you fighting off the digestive creatures inside the whale, before attacking it's heart and fending off an unimaginable amount of those creatures. And then, when you reach level 7 (Phantalassa), it's boss city. I wanted a home version so bad, but one never got released. A great shame. |

^^^YES DKC 2!
I was playing that game 2 days ago, now I'm playing #3. It did have one of the best soundtracks, and some of the most original concepts/level designs.
Also, I only noticed yesterday, after 11 years, that the name of every level in every DKC game either alliterates or rhymes. _________________

Agh, i hated the old sonic 2D games. The "Right arrow key" was too spammable and was not a challenge.
Sonic adventure on dreamcast is probably sparked my intrest. The Chao's are so awesome! I remember having mine on lvl 99 on everything and would just soar throughout the races... and it got even better when i could have my chao on my gameboy. |
