That's right. Not Batman, but Robin

October 1, 2008 - In a surprising announcement, Variety has revealed that The CW is developing a new series based around Batman's partner Robin, albeit one set in the days before he became a superhero. The Graysons will follow Dick Grayson and his family, likely via their life as acrobats.

Amusingly, Dick has been given the nickname "DJ" for The Graysons, presumably because these days audiences would find unintended humor in his traditional first name. Variety says the potential series will be set in modern times and that DJ, "will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up." A pilot has been ordered.

Guiding the project are Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, two of the four Smallville writers who were elevated to showrunners this season. With Smallville potentially ending this season, The Graysons, which like Smallville -- would be produced by Warner Bros, is viewed as a possible replacement series and if Smallville returns, a show that could possibly be paired with it [I wouldn't freak out about this speculation Supernatural fans, for reasons noted below]. Also on board as an executive producer for The Graysons is Terminator Salvation director McG, whose TV series include Chuck and Supernatural.

- DC ComicsYes, we know it's the Tim Drake Robin
on this coverThe announcement is interesting for a number of reasons It's no surprise that Smallville might be ending soon, but speculation had been that there could be a spinoff of that series. However, The Graysons is obviously not a direct spinoff, yet it shares many aspects Smallville, with its focus on a young DC comics character before he becomes the hero he's destined to be. Like Smallville, The Graysons will likely also differ greatly from traditional DC continuity, since it seems almost certain "DJ" Grayson will already be high school age when the series begins, making him much older by the time he becomes Batman's partner than he was in the comics.

Speaking of Batman, it's been well documented that he was the one DC character the Smallville producers have been forbidden to use, even as Clark Kent has met several other DC icons. Word is that certain people involved in DC Comics and/or Warner Bros (who are corporate siblings) feel there might be audience confusion over a different actor portraying Bruce Wayne on TV than in the films. But on the heels of The Dark Knight's success, it's likely that a Robin-centric became more appealing, given the huge connection audiences have between that character and Batman which is all the more amusing, given Christian Bale's insistence that Robin not appear in the Batman films while he's starring in them.

Variety also notes that Warner Bros partnering with The CW on The Graysons is seen an encouraging symbol for The CW, which came into this season on very rocky road, having failed to establish themselves with any true breakout hits. However, there have been some relatively encouraging signs, including recent growth for Gossip Girl, the strong debut of 90210 (albeit with a notable leveling off afterwards) and Supernatural scoring its best ratings since the show made the transition from The WB. Variety says CW insiders, "believe the studio wouldn't risk bringing one of its prized franchises to CW if it believed the net was in dire straits."
