Who gets the game ball from New England’s 31-20 loss? The New England Patriots suffered their first defeat of the 2018 season earlier today: New England went on the road and was beaten 31-20 by the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was a lackluster performance by the reigning AFC champions in all three phases of the game – but one that still had at least some silver linings. Let’s take a look at three of them.QB Tom BradyDespite being under constant pressure especially early during the contest , Brady was still able to deliver a solid performance. He was not perfect by any means, but the future Hall of Famer again was the reason why the Patriots were in the game up until almost the very end. Along the way, the 41-year old completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 234 yards and a pair of touchdowns – while also converting a third down at one point on a 10-yard scramble.RB Sony MichelThe numbers – 10 rushes for 34 yards and one catch for seven more – tell only half the story when it comes to Sony Michel’s NFL debut. Going against one of the league’s top defensive fronts, the 31st overall selection of this year’s draft displayed some of the traits that made him a first-round pick: he was powerful as a runner, and used all over the formation. Certainly an encouraging first step from the Patriots’ future number one running back.RB James WhiteWhile Michel’s performance was encouraging, James White’s was actually productive: the Patriots’ primary receiving back was the team’s most potent offensive playmaker today and finished with seven receptions for 73 yards and three carries for 11 yards. Serving as Tom Brady’s safety blanket and primary target in the passing game, White helped keep the passing game on track even when others failed to step up.With all that in mind, who is your choice for this week’s game ball? The New England Patriots front office is busy these days. On Monday Womens Cordarrelle Patterson Jersey , the team signed linebacker Ufomba Kamalu to the practice squad while bringing linebacker Albert McClellan in for a free agency visit. On Tuesday, the Patriots made a total of six transactions including signing McClellan and former second-round draft pick Obi Melifonwu. It now appears as if they were ready to make another move as well.According to the man himself, the Patriots made an offer to free agent defensive edge Bruce Irvin. “This was a dream [come] true,” Irvin told ESPN Atlanta’s Vaughn McClure after the veteran signed a one-year contract with his hometown Atlanta Falcons. “The Patriots and [Pittsburgh] Steelers offered more money, but being able to play for my city and my people, you just can’t put a price on that.”Irvin would have been an intriguing addition to a Patriots team that currently operates on $4.79 million of salary cap space. The 31-year old, who spent the first four years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Oakland Raiders in 2016, is an experienced and proven option at the defensive edge. Before the Raiders released him last week , he played almost half of the team’s defensive snaps and registered 3.0 sacks. While New England had a very good pass rushing performance on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, the team has generally been inconsistent when it comes to putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. While Irvin would not have been the lone fix to this, his presence alongside Trey Flowers, Adrian Clayborn and Deatrich Wise Jr. as well as reserves Derek Rivers and Keionta Davis would have given the team more flexibility. With Irvin opting to return home instead of moving to New England, however, the team will have to rely on the five players listed above — plus versatile linebackers Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy — to rush the passer moving forward. By no means is this a bad group of players, but one that has had its struggles especially early during the season.
