I'm getting a imac this weekend, and it comes with 1GB RAM installed, but for $175 I can upgrade to 2GB. Do you think this is worth it? Thanks.

EDIT: Here are the specs, if that makes a difference. Its the 20'

Depends on what you are planning to do with your system. IMO, I should stick with 1GB, but more never hurts.

I'll be doing some video and music editing as well as some web design, but nothing too heavy, just recreationaly. I really just want to know if 2 GB is overkill or not. I would rather not spend the extra $175, but I will if 1 GB is not enough.

Hmm, if you're going to do that then I think you should. Like I said, extra RAM never hurts.

I have 512Mbytes of RAM, and that seems to do me for video/audio editing AND running RAM-eating programs like Norton Antivirus. 1 Gbyte should be fine unless you're planning to run 3 video editing suites at once.

I own a imac and I can say that 1GB is fine. It is more than enough to do simple video and music editing. 2GB is not overkill, but depending upon how many programs you have open it would be better. The MAC OS eats up a lot of RAM very quickly.

BTW, RAM is user replaceable on the imac, so if you want to save money, buy the ram and install it yourself..

I didn't think you could open up an imac.

you can, only the RAM is user replaceable, the removable cover is located on the bottom of your Imac.
