That's how fast qwest says their internet service is. Is that fast? Is $22 a good deal for this speed?

1.5Mbps means 1.5 (one and a half) Megabits per second That's 1,500,000 bits (or 187,500 bytes or 183 kilobytes) per second.

To give you an idea, let's say you have an mp3 file that's 3 megabytes in size. That's about 3 minutes at low quality.

3Mbytes = 3 x 1024 = 3072 kilobytes.

Top speed of download on that ISP is 183 per second, so:

3072 divide by 183 = 16.8 seconds to 1 decimal place.

In other words, to download an mp3 can take less than 20 seconds. It's pretty fast, but it's speed will also be determined by the server you're downloading from, the traffic on the net at that point, etc. For general browsing, it's very good, more than you would probably need. For online gaming, it's a very good connection.

Economically, I can't tell you if that's a good price because I don't know the U.S. prices, but I hope I helped you on the technical side.

THAT'S REALLY SLOW, there must be a typo. You sure it wasn't 150 Mbps?

Cause I just checked and mine runs at 100 Mbps, and it's about average when compared to other computers I've used.

Yeah, that's the connection between your modem and your computer. The connection between your modem and the web doesn't run as fast as that unless you have a T3 or some ****.

150 megabits per second could download a 6 gigabyte file (equivalent to a DVD) in... 343 seconds. That's just under 6 minutes.

Yeah but downloading times aren't neccessarily paralleled to your internet speed though. You'd never be able to DL at the maximum speed of your internet provider, and if you were correct about this, 1500Kbps (what he initially mentioned) is unheard of for download speed.

My provider gives me from July 3rd 8Mbps download and 1.2Mpbs upload. I upload pretty fast now (close to 100KB/s), and downloadspeed is pretty much great. 800KB/s isn't rare.

1.5 MBPs is pretty much a download of 150kb/s when you download files online. For $22, that's decent. I would switch to AT&T Yahoo DSL though, they currently charge about $12.99 for 1.5mbps and $17.99 for 3.0mbps.

Is 1.5Mbps fast enough to play games online without lag? Right now I'm stuck playing Xbox Live with dial up and I lag a lot.

Oh, and I can't get yahoo cuz I don't have AT&T. Sad

Yes, 1.5Mbps is fast enough to play online games, there may be some slight lag still.

How.. the... ?

How are you playing on XBL with dial-up? I thought it was a broadband only service?

Anyways, 1.5Mbs is decent. Not bad, not good. It's definately playable online.
