I used to when I was a kid. I guess it's an alright concept, kinda like a new years resolution, but it's forced. The only problems I have with it are:

a) You shouldn't force a behaviour out of someone, especially if its only for a few weeks. What I mean is, like it's okay if the person wants to challenge themselves, or give up an addiction for lent. But I don't see why it has to be for lent, if you have an addiction that you believe is bad, you should be willing to do that anyways, not just because it's lent.

b) I don't really like to be associated with organized religion. There's a few reasons why, but I don't think it would be wise to elaborate. I've seen what happens with religious debates over the internet.

These are just MY opinions. Not saying everyone should agree.

It isn't forced on anyone. It's supposed to be giving up something that keeps you apart from God, which can be anything. TV, stuff, etc. I think that it's entirely voluntary (though it may not be in really catholic areas...)

I'm not doing anything for lent though....

That pretty much sums it up. Not to start anything on religion, but I am old enough that if i didn't want to, i wouldn't, and it may only be forced on young kids who give up stuff like candy and stuff...

Anyways, it isn't really and addiction *cough* like smoking *cough* and it really isn't a bad habit. Would you say sports are a bad habit just cause someone loves it and spends hours a day doing it? Yeah, thats what i thought.

And that would be creepy if it was forced on adults Sad

Anyway, thats just my opinion, so think what you want Smile

I didn't meant forced as in someone's having it forced upon them. I meant forced as in the behaviour, as it's not authentic. It's called cognitive dissonance.

Now what I was getting at was like, if someone believes that they have a bad addiction, then why does it have to be "for Lent". If you think it's wrong, you should want to beat the addiction permantley or during anytime of the year. I just don't like how some people have that "40 days of cold turkey, then I'm pure" mindset. I'm not saying that you do, but it does exist.

Okay, see, it's all about perspective here. Would I say sports are a bad habit if someone loves it and spends hours a day doing it? not neccesarily, but that's irrelevant. Because, it's not what I think, or what society thinks, but what that person thinks. If they truly believe their sports is a bad habit then they should make an attempt to give it up or limit it in general. Not just give it up for 40 days then go back to it.

And that first statement is untrue. Who's to say video games can't be an addiction "like smoking", yeah I know it's not for you, but it is possible to develop a videogame addiction that's more serious than nicotine. The problem with cigarettes is that it's easy to BECOME addicted. Doesn't mean you can't get addicted to videogames, it's just not as likely.

Lent is supposed to be a time when you get closer to God. If you want, you can continue giving up whatever it is for the rest of forever. Most people wouldn't want to go that long without whatever it is though.

Okay, thats kool. Just a little mis-interpretation is all. Yeah, video games can become a addiction and yeah, it annoys me how some people think that giving it up for a few weeks makes them a better person. If anyone recalls some of the Bible, the pharasies did that....

Anyway, yeah, if i give it up it tends to help with it for awhile anyway, then i'm kinda out of the habit so to say, then i don't play as much for the next couple of months, come to think about, after i got my job, i didn't play them that much anyways....
