It's really rather awkward having 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, only to have 24 hours in a day. Why can't we have 10 seconds per minute, 100 minutes per hour and 20 hours per day? That way, doing time based maths becomes a lot easier!

I am, of course, talking crap, but if the EU continues to get it's way, this may happen. Discuss.

In the very far future a day will last as long as a week. How's that.

Ryu, if humanity still exists by then they're goign to have enough technology to change the speed of the earth's ... spinning, ... turning, what's the word?

BTW

100 * 100 * 20 = 200.000

60 * 60 * 24 = 86.400

try ten hours.

If we have that much technology, it is very unlikely that we are still on Earth.

Rotation. And there's no way any civilization would be willing to use the amount of energy required to change the rotation of the earth. It would be easier to just change the calanders, etc, and deal with it. Besides, by that time, the sun may have gone red giant and cooked the earth anyway.

I bet even though its cooler than a regular star it could still cook us.

I never understood how we measure time in the first place. In between two nanoseconds there is a an infinity of things that happen. How do we measure that? Time is the name we gave to continous decay, it's not a metric system.

um how? the sun right now is in the main sequence, and do i feel like im melting? no, and oddly enought, a white dwarf (no not that dwarf) which is the next stage in a star, is hotter than a main sequence star. knowledge is power! the more you know

The stupider you look when you don't know what you're talking about! Razz

The sun will cook us when it goes into a red giant phase (it's next phase). It is NOT as hot as the yellow (current) phase, but a red giant is MUCH larger. So the sun will basically be closer to the Earth. Even though the radiation from the sun is weaker, since it is so much closer, we'll get more radiation than we do now. Then we'll all cook like eggs on a sidewalk!
